Chapter Nineteen
“What's this?” Kate asked and turned to show Andri.
“Whoa.” He pushed it away. “That's an energy weapon. If you’re hit by a bolt from that, you'll get cooked from the inside out.” He scanned the area. They were in a dense jungle with all sorts of birds flying in and around them. He set his weapon down for a minute, peeking over the bushes to get his bearings. “We are on the planet of Skolt. I’ve been here before.”
Her eyes went down to the weapon. “We're going to kill somebody, aren't we?”
“Only if they try to kill us.”
“I don't want to do this anymore. I want to be a doctor. I want to help people, not kill them.”
Andri adjusted the neckline of his blue uniform. “You can't quit, but you can become a doctor if you want. You have years to study because you'll never age another day.”
“Shh,” came a voice from the next bush.
They sat in silence for an hour before a man stood up. “All clear. The government patrol has left the area.”
Thirty men and women appeared from cover. Andri and Kate stood. A man walked up to them. “I am Frekran, the leader of the unit. You must be the reinforcements I asked for.”
“We are the first to get here. I am Andri and this is Kate. The others may be delayed.”
“You are needed,” Frekran replied. “I am going to send you two with Gret to keep an eye on that patrol. He's my best tracker. Wait here.”
Kate leaned over to Andri. “Why did you tell him the other reinforcements may be delayed?”
“I've read about this war. The rebels will be defeated. Their reinforcements have already been wiped out to a man.”
“What are we doing here, if it’s in the past?”
“We need to save someone, I think.”
Kate sighed. “I hate not knowing.”
Frekan came up with a boy of about fourteen. “This is Gret. He's my best tracker; protect him.”
Freyja and Andri nodded. The young man stood just over shoulder level to Andri. He had an eager, quick smile.
“This way let's go before the trail gets cold.” Gret led them to a path.
Andri kept looking down at it. The enemy took no effort at all to hide their tracks. As they neared a rise, Andri stopped Gret. “It's a trap. Stay here, I'm going to scout ahead.”
Instead of making his way along the path, Andri crawled slowly through the trees and undergrowth until he could see the path ahead. Stopping when he reached a vantage point, Andri scanned the area. At first, he couldn't see anything. But then saw a flash from a sniper’s scope in a tree down below. As Andri watched, he saw five more men making their way to the tree the sniper sat in. They fanned out and hid in the grass at the base of it.
Andri slipped back down to where Kate and Gret were. “There is a sniper and five soldiers just over the rise. If we would have gone that way, we would be dead by now.
